The fit score and letter grades

What the 0 to 100 fit score measures, what A, B, and C mean, and why two schools with different numbers can be the same grade.

Updated September 30, 2026

The fit score is one number from 0 to 100 for each school on your report. It answers a single question: how well does this school match what you said matters to you.

It is not a ranking of how good the school is, and it is not a prediction of whether you will be recruited. A school with a fit score of 90 is a school that matches your preferences on the factors you weighted most. Another family with different answers gets a different number for the same school.

How it is calculated

Mosaic scores each factor on the report separately. Distance, school size, campus setting, climate, academics, cost, and the rest each get their own 0 to 100 score for each school. Your weight for each factor, from 0 to 10, decides how much that factor pulls on the total. The fit score is the weighted average.

The first factor, level match, needs no answer from you. It compares the school's level with your ability band: a school at your band scores 100, one tier away 70, two tiers 40, three tiers 10. The reason reads like "D3 program, your band is Tier 4" or "D1 program, two tiers above your band". You only set how much it matters; it starts at 8 of 10.

A factor with no data for a school is left out of that school's average rather than counted as a neutral 50. The report shows how many of the factors had data next to each score, for example 10 of 12. A score built on 9 factors is more trustworthy than one built on 4.

Schools where fewer than half the factors have data are listed after the others and marked Low data, so a high score on thin data does not outrank a solid score on full data. When you gave playability a weight, schools whose roster Mosaic has not read yet are listed after the schools it could assess within the same letter grade. An A school with an unread roster still sits above a B school that was assessed.

One rule sits on top of the average. When your position is Blocked at a school and you gave playability any weight, that school's fit is capped at 79, a B at most, however well the rest fits. The report notes it under the school as "Capped at B: position is blocked".

Letter grades

The letter next to the score is the part to read first.

GradeScoreWhat it means
A80 to 99A strong match on the factors you weighted most. Worth a serious look.
B60 to 79A good match with one or two factors that pull it down. Check the tiles to see which.
CBelow 60Several factors miss what you asked for. Usually not worth a visit unless a factor you care about changes.

Two schools at 86 and 84 are both A schools. The two-point gap is real for sorting the list, but it is not a reason to prefer one over the other. Use the letter to decide which group a school belongs in, then use the factor tiles to see why.

On the player card, the large number is how many schools on the latest report scored an A, 80 or higher, not counting Low data schools. Beneath it, the card names your best match and its score.

You will not see a score of 100. A perfect match on every factor does not exist, and the display stops at 99.

When the score changes

The score changes when you change an answer or a weight and run the report again. It also changes when Mosaic's data changes, for example when a school's roster updates and the playability factor moves. The date on the report tells you when it was generated.
